You can feed your dog/cat a vegan diet if you please, but I will never advocate or endorse it. I don’t make my fox believe in Buddha because I do. So why would I make him eat a diet that is not natural for him? Opinions, opinions everywhere.
People that force vegan diets on animals…
Oh my GOD the absolute awfulness of people in response to my reply to a post. Yuck. Also I noticed someone responded to this with “what’s wrong with vegans?” or something along those lines, just ASSUMING that I am vegan.
I’m a person who’s done their research out of curiosity. I don’t feed my animals vegan diets, but I know for a fact that it is entirely possible for them to live happy, healthy lives without consuming mass produced meat products.
Lol she picks MY reply out of all of them to say how “awful” people are being to her. Your reply was pretty deserving of the responses, to be frank. You should have seen it coming. And if your supposed myriad sources includes some shit like PETA, keep walking.
You were the only person who reblogged it. I’m not about to go copying and pasting everyone’s replies - I feel like your reblog illustrated the situation pretty well. Besides, I’m not taking this personally, it’s not about how “awful people are being to me”. Just awful in general. About something they haven’t tried to understand. Which is pretty normal! People aren’t normally very receptive to things they don’t understand. It’s just a problem that people are making wild claims without even trying to understand.
My sources are pretty varied - People who have successfully transitioned their animals to cruelty free diets, vets/vet science students, owner testimonials on the veganpet website (and forums/groups etc.). I wasn’t on board with it to begin with, and even now trying to transition any of my animals would make me stressed and panicky but I know that it’s possible and not cruel when undertaken with the right knowledge.
I was going to leave this alone, but I’m really sorry. I just can’t.
Honey, owner testimonials are not reliable. A lot of people will own several pets and never truly understand the animals in their care.
Cats especially are obligate carnivores. This means they can’t process plant matter. At all. Period. When you watch your cats eating grass, that’s an indication that they feel ill and are trying to purge their stomachs. As many others have said before me, and several more legitimate reputable sources on animal research will tell you, removing taurine from a cat’s diet (it’s a natural acid found only in meat) will cause it to go irreversibly blind. I don’t call that healthy. In most cases I wouldn’t consider that conducive to happiness either.
I have a nineteen-year-old cat. She looks ten. She didn’t get that way on a “cruelty-free” diet. She got there by eating a balanced diet high in meat protein and small animals living about the property. She’s happy, healthy, and chases our youngest cats around the house in play. I can guarantee she would not still be here if I tried to feed her a vegan diet.
I really don’t understand what is so difficult about acknowledging the fundamental aspects of an animal’s physiology. Carnivores get their energy from eating other animals, plain and simple. They cannot derive the same kind of energy from eating soy and quinoa. They’re not built for that. Stop ignoring this fact for the sake of your ideals and agenda.
What you are insisting is equivalent to adamantly trying to convince people that a giraffe can live a long, healthy life exclusively on steak and fish, or that parrots will live twice as long on a diet heavy in chocolate.
I just… please stop.
Yeah I stopped reading after you said “honey”. No need to be condescending. I don’t know if you read, but I did point out that I have spoken to vets and vet students who have seen first hand that animals on properly supplemented vegan diets are capable of being incredibly healthy.
In the cases of cats, it’s taurine in the meat that they require. And that’s easily synthesised.
So, “honey”, I’m not making blind assumptions. I’ve done my research. I’m aware of what I’m talking about.
who is this dipshit and why are they calling you honey? as soon as someone says “honey” in a discussion - the discussion is over. 0 points to the condescending sexist douche of the century, 1,000,000 points to you.
this person arguing with you is 100% wrong. since when is being a person who cares about animals and the environment we like to call EARTH qualify as having an “agenda”? for fuckssake this republican is making me nauseous. also i’m sick of people misusing the word agenda.
Wow, your angry assumptions because I used a single word is quite incredible.
I don’t see how being genuinely concerned about the kind of misinformation people are throwing about is grounds for petty insults.
I’m not misusing the word agenda. I’m also not being condescending when I use “honey” or “dear” or “sweetheart”. It’s called terms of endearment and I mean them sincerely.
See, here’s an example of my use of the word agenda. My agenda is to help people understand how the universe works and discern what are actual facts and what are fabrications colored by bias. When your mission is to affect something, whether it be politics or the way people think and act, that’s an agenda. You are doing things with the intent to change something, even if your actions involve just spreading a particular amalgamation of words about.
Supplements will never match the nutrition of the natural equivalents of the animal’s required diet. The fact that supplements are required at all is clear indication that the food provided is not suitable to their needs. This is demonstrated constantly in human dietary habits. In the case of obligate carnivores, you may as well be feeding them nothing but those supplements.
What’s truly nauseating is your hostility when I am very civilly imploring you and others who think like you to remember the workings of nature.
The baseless assumptions of my world view and character? These are called ad hominem attacks.
Your dismissive attitude is also appalling. I could have stopped reading as soon as I hit “dipshit” but I did not because I respect the fact that you have something to say with the intent of it being read. The same goes for borncaptiv-e at “I stopped reading when[…]”. How incredibly rude. I gave you the courtesy of providing a constructed argument absent of strawmen or ad hominem, or even foul language. It should not be wrong to expect the same.
I’m so sorry I used a word you dislike so viscerally. My intention is not to aggravate, but I often forget the sensitivity thresholds so widespread on Tumblr. Were I being condescending, I would have called you “kiddo” or “champ” in sarcasm.
